Nature and culture in the surrounding area

OUR TIPS

Within an hour’s drive from our campsite, there’s a lot to experience. But even in the nearby area, you can fully enjoy nature and culture. Here are some recommendations.

Ooidonk Castle

Nature and culture: Castle Ooidonk

Combine nature and culture by exploring the grand Ooidonk Castle. It’s located within cycling distance from our campsite, on the banks of the Leie. The surrounding water and beautiful park radiate tranquility, despite the castle’s turbulent history. This unique medieval fortress was rebuilt in 1595 and features a blend of Spanish-Flemish Renaissance architecture. It’s one of the most beautiful castles in Belgium. The distinctive step gables and unique towers make it an East Flemish treasure, comparable to the castles of the Loire.

Grain distillery Filliers

Nature and culture: Filliers grain distillery - Deinze
Grain distillery Filliers

This well-known grain distillery near Deinze is the market leader in Belgian genevers. But it also makes gin, whiskey, eggnog, etc.

Since its foundation in 1880, the company has been run by the Filliers family. Currently, the fifth generation is at the helm and the company continues to grow. Recently, Filliers started a special collaboration with Douglas Laing & Co, a historic company in the United Kingdom, known for their independent whiskey bottlings.

A visit to the grain distillery is an ideal mix of culture, tourism and history. For more information, visit the Filliers website.

Nature en culture in Ghent en Bruges

Nature and culture: Ghent city centre - St Bavo's Cathedral
Bruges - cultural and historical city

Ghent is within a stone’s throw from our campsite and can be easily combined with a bike ride in nature. Bruges is also definitely worth a visit. Lovers of culture, art, and history, as well as shopaholics and foodies, will certainly get their money’s worth here.

Ghent is a vibrant, hip city where ancient culture and modern society beautifully intertwine. This is also where the rivers Lys and Scheldt flow together.

Bruges, on the other hand, is the city of art par excellence where history is still clearly visible. Enjoy a boat trip on the canals, a horse-drawn carriage ride, or a delicious Brugse Zot beer on a terrace in the cozy city center. Savor the city’s green spaces during a picnic or take a walk in the beautiful Bruges countryside.

Tip: Visit the tourist websites of Ghent and Bruges to discover the hidden gems of these cities.

Especially for the nature lovers

Zwalm region - nature and culture
Nature and culture - the 'ferry' over the river Lys

The Leie region, in which our campsite is located, is an ideal cycling region due to its many car-free bike paths. These are primarily found on the towpaths along the rivers and canals or along the old railway lines that have now been transformed into green cycling axes.

In the heart of the Flemish Ardennes, sometimes called ‘the Tuscany of Flanders’, nature lovers should definitely visit the beautiful Zwalm region. Beautiful vistas, rolling meadows, forests and countless cycling and walking routes lead you along the most beautiful natural spots where you can still your the sound of silence.
